Britain and the Middle East: From the Arab Spring to Brexit

Christian Turner CMG, Britain’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Pakistan, discusses the UK’s interests in, and relations with, the countries of the Middle East and North Africa in a speech marking the launch of the new Institute of Middle East Studies. Anamorphosis: Notes from the West Bank, Winter in the Kashmir Valley
27 September–7 December, The Mosaic Rooms, London SW5. Amsterdam-based Indian artist Pranset Soi draws on unusual photographic perspectives to illustrate his stays in Palestine and Kashmir. On Akka’s Shore
28 September, The Mosaic Rooms, London SW5. London-based Lebanese artist Umama Hamido describes this live performance combining film, text, sound and rap as a fictional memoir based on hallucinations, dreams and out-of-body experiences. Arabic Literature in Translation
29 September, Café Palestina, London NW5. Ghassan Kanafani’s collection of short stories, Palestine’s Children, is the first subject of this new book club to be held at the Café on the last Sunday of every month. Before his assassination in Beirut in 1972, Kanafani was a prolific writer of fiction as well as editor of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine’s weekly magazine, Al-Hadaf.
